These letters were received by Jimmy Maulden, and passed on to me.   We appreciate your contribution Jimmy.   You can tell by the way the letters are written that they come from someone who knows the Red River County Jail and its operation.  Therefore the webmaster believes these letters to be authentic.  He knows from talking with jail employees that the Sheriff will fire a whistle blower, as will any county official who finds one.  This is the reason these letters were submitted anonymously.   I feel sorry for these employees that have to contend with a job like theirs, and then have the Sheriff not care enough about their health to ban smoking in the jail.  In Texas prisons, it is against the law to even carry tobacco into the facility.  There is no smoking in any Texas prison and it has been that way for many years.  I used to work on the telephone systems in the State Prison's in West Texas.  They are all non-smoking facilities.  Smoking was not even allowed in the parking lot in front of the prison.  The only place anyone could smoke was out on the side of the highway completely off prison property.  This is the truth folks, because I was there, and I for sure know.   Also, upon checking with the Hunt County Jail Facilities, the Chief Jailer there stated that it costs their jail $23.76 per day to house a federal inmate, and that does not include the cost of the building but does include everything else.  We do not know how much it costs here but after some calculations, we found that the county only has about $8,000.00 left over each month if they are spending what Hunt County is per inmate.  I would bet that the statement Sheriff Reed made about paying for the County Employees Health Insurance is not quite as accurate as he would want us to believe.
